pool rules

has anyone heard of the five minute break?
while swimming tonight at a local pool in town (the taylorsville community pool to be exact) the lifeguards all blew their whistles at the same time, instigating the five minute break. what is the five minute break you might be wondering? I don't know, I'm still trying to figure it out. it basically consisted of everyone getting out of the pool for five minutes--and not all the way out mind you, we all had our feet dangling as we sat on the side. to top it off, a storm was blowing in from the south. instead of the five-thousand degree temps we've been having, a fabulous little chilly breeze was had by all. a cool front + wet bodies equals not so much fun. all the lifeguards sat at the ready in their chairs, but nobody was allowed in the water.

when asked why we needed a five minute break, the lifeguard responded, "to check stuff." what that stuff is, I have no idea.

is this a standard procedure? does your community pool enforce this? it seemed slightly bizarre to me.

Did they all have to check out some girl or something?

We've had that before at the beach in Boston. There, I can understand it, as they are checking the water to make sure no one drowned, and maybe sharks, too (I don't know). But in a pool? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard of!

I've never heard of that, and it seems pretty stupid. They could have at least pretended to check stuff rather than just sit there.

When I lived in Virginia, every 45 minutes they made the kids get out of the pool for 15 minutes for an "adult swim." I don't know who regulates it, but I think it's so kids don't get to exhausted and probably to make sure no kids have drowned, etc. So the adults could stay in, but the kids had to get out, but they could play in the kiddie pool if they wanted. That's interesting they are doing here...but the adults had to get out too?

Our pool does this once in a while...usually checking for body fluids/solids I think...
